Located near Rathbun Lake in south central Iowa, this private chapel has won a top architectural award. Photographer: Cameron Campbell.

“It is a crib. It is a chapel. It is not to be readily understood. Spirituality is complex. It is a considered place to consider.”

These are the underlying principles architect Brent Schipper of Des Moines-based ASK Studio used in creating the design of the Ullem Chapel. The award-winning structure, which is located near Iconium, just north of Rathbun Lake, is a private space for the family that lives on the land. “The design of Ullem Chapel is a painstakingly simple solution, which any architect knows is anything but simple to achieve,” says Jeff Budgell, president of the Association of Licensed Architects, which awarded the chapel its top honor, the Don Erickson Presidential Award.
