Des Moines International Airport

Growth projections suggest 5 million passengers will be using DSM annually by 2042.

Community Challenge

The Des Moines International Airport terminal has reached its useful life. As the busiest airport in the state, the terminal causes operational ineffi ciencies and passenger congestion at peak times diminishing the traveler experience. A new terminal is needed to continue being an eff ective and effi cient transportation hub for Iowans.

The Big Idea

The Des Moines Airport Authority is planning to build a new terminal to meet the air travel demands of the region and state. With room for growth in gates, air service, and airlines, an expanded terminal will allow for scalable growth as the population in the region and state increases. A state with modern amenities will attract and retain employees as well as visitors who support tourism efforts. Keeping the state growing is vital to economic success. An updated capital city airport with the capabilities to competitively transport passengers and cargo is instrumental in maintaining growth.

Results

A new terminal will include modern functionality and improve the experience of traveling through the airport, creating a positive passenger experience. The expanded and enhanced terminal will also increase efficiency while creating opportunities for air service and cargo growth, ultimately boosting continued growth and development of the region and state.
