Kwanzaa takes its name from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza,” which means “first fruits of the harvest.”
The Keokuk Association for Rights and Equality presents an educational event at 11 a.m. Dec. 27, the day after Kwanzaa begins, at the Keokuk Public Library. The group will teach visitors about the history and traditions of the seven-day holiday, which is celebrated by African Americans and others among the African diaspora.
