Four Seasons of Outdoor Fun

Get nurtured in nature year-round at these green spaces adjacent to the Raccoon River.

Brown’s Woods Forest Preserve
The forest south on 63rd Street is a top area to hike, cross-country ski or snowshoe with few crowds. Spring brings a wildflower carpet to the forest floor and perhaps a chance to pick morel mushrooms; summer offers shady hikes under the mature canopy; fall brings layers of warm colors; and winter entices with a quiet escape in nature — the back hills are particularly fun (and challenging) on skis. Four miles of trails (and several loops with shorter distances) make this area family friendly and great for outdoor photo opportunities.

Raccoon River Park

Raccoon River Park
This large expanse on Grand Avenue might be one of the city’s best makeover stories. What started as a quarry has transformed into a city-owned park that is a top area to kayak and paddleboard (there’s a new boathouse with rentals), play softball with friends, let the dog loose in the 10-acre dog park, host a family picnic near a great playground, and swim from a sandy beach. In the fall and winter months, hike, ski or fat-tire bike around the perimeter of Blue Heron Lake for an easy 3 miles of exercise. Or bring your own skates and cruise the special skating area if ice conditions allow. The park has access to area bike trails, making it a perfect cycling destination throughout the year.

Jamie Hurd Amphitheater

Walnut Woods State Park
Just a few miles west of Brown’s Woods, this state park gives a weekend away in nature within city limits, thanks to a full-service campground. Book a spot for cookouts and campfires amid the shady environs. Check out the bird blind loaded with feeders to see a variety of species. In winter, the local residents are particularly hungry and fun to watch. If you’re looking for an ideal party site, reserve the historic limestone-clad lodge, which has a full kitchen, a functional fireplace and picnic tables (both inside and out). Book online at reserveamerica.com. Also find a playground and a
boat launch.
