With a 1975 photograph titled “Nan Wood Graham, Riverside, California,” Bourret achieved a memorably stark, late-life portrait of artist Grant Wood’s fiercely protective sister. Graham, bewigged and gingham-costumed, holds a jug printed with Wood’s “American Gothic” farm duo. On the wall behind her hang four of her brother’s prints. The Metropolitan Museum of Art owns a limited-edition silver print of this photo.

I have been to Nan’s home many times as a child. Her family and my grandmother’s family were friends in Iowa, and in later life, my grandmother cared for her, then mover her to a care home across the street from my grandmother in Menlo park, CA, where she eventually passed away.
