Iowa State University’s annual VEISHEA festival may be long gone, but spring is still a great time to visit Ames.
Next Saturday, April 20, check out the Black Arts Festival at the Ames Public Library, where African and African American artists in the community plan to share their work. Alongside exhibitions from Kamryn Williams and Nebula Sula, the family-friendly event will feature spoken-word poets, music and dance performances, a teen craft space, and lunch.
Later that night, head over to Stephens Auditorium for Iowa State’s annual fashion show. Design students spend all year planning the event, from the fashions on stage to the lighting overhead. Last year, guest designers from Steve Madden debuted a never-before-seen collection for a crowd of more than 2,000. Be sure to pick up your tickets in advance; they often go fast.
A couple of Broadway shows will be passing through Ames in the coming weeks, too. If you didn’t catch the most recent “Mean Girls” flick while it was in movie theaters (again), you have a chance to see the “Mean Girls” musical live at 7:30 tonight at Stephens. Otherwise, head back on May 14 for the 25th anniversary of “Chicago.”
