Happy trails to you – and a whole bunch of runners

Every year, there are literally hundreds of road races across Iowa – 5K, 10K, half- and full marathons to raise money for a good cause or round out a weekend festival. But if you’d like to veer off the pavement and explore the outdoors, consider signing up for the seventh annual Iowa Trail Run Series.

This year’s series started this past Saturday in Des Moines but still offers seven more runs over the next few months: at Sugar Bottom near Solon (April 13), Ledges State Park near Boone (June 8), in Ames (June 22), Waubonsie State Park near Hamburg (Aug. 3), Yellow River State Forest near Harpers Ferry (Sept. 15), Jester Park near Granger (Sept. 22) and the Annett Nature Center in Indianola (Oct. 6).

You can choose to run as many sites as you’d like, and each place offers routes of varying distances. There are races for kids, too — a perfect opportunity to get away from screens and burn some energy in the great outdoors.
