Held on the only Native American settlement in Iowa, this year’s Meskwaki Annual Powwow is set for Aug. 10-13. The Meskwaki Nation is made up of the Sac and Fox Tribe of the Mississippi in Iowa, centered at a federally recognized settlement near Tama. Each year, it hosts a four-day festival and invites visitors to enjoy the ceremonies alongside the tribe.

The powwow showcases traditional dancing, singing, food and artwork. Many of the dances, like the Friendship Dance or Swan Dance, have been passed down through generations. The multisensory event also features colorful handmade regalia and traditional foods, like fry bread.

Keep in mind, the powwow’s organizers ask all visitors to respect the sacred nature of the event and have prepared some etiquette tips to help newcomers know what to expect.
