West Des Moines at a Glance

With 70 neighborhoods, West Des Moines has steadily grown since its beginning in the 1800s. At 65,000 people, it’s the largest Des Moines suburb and offers historic areas, established neighborhoods, plus new developments.

Historic Valley Junction

The original West Des Moines, this area just west of Des Moines is on the National Register of Historic Places and offers several blocks brimming with independent shops, restaurants, bars, design businesses and more. The Thursday night farmers market (which started in the 1970s) is a key attraction each week during the summer, with live tunes, tasty bites and loads of fresh produce. Find other events through the year, including the
Antique Jamboree. 

East of Interstate 35 

Valley High School, Valley West Mall and the University corridor are all part of this area. Find big-box retailers, parks loaded with amenities (including water recreation, sports fields and bike trails), plus numerous neighborhoods with family-friendly homes. Affordable housing developments are new additions to the area’s south side.

West of Interstate 35

Developed within the past two decades, the city’s western section is home to Jordan Creek Town Center with Jordan Creek mall, plus popular entertainment and dining options. A variety of housing types are available for those looking to rent or buy. Many of the largest employers are located
in the area.
